Introduction: The Battle Of The Basils

While we’re just now sharing these posts, the contest actually ran from July 16th to September 10th. We’re excited to finally showcase all the amazing moments!*

Hey Everyone!!!

Gerard here from mydigifarm with some thrilling news you won’t want to miss! Remember that “little competition” I teased in my last blog post? (If not, check it out here) Well, the wait is over! I’m super excited to officially launch mydigifarm’s very first ever growing showdown: “The Battle of the Basils”!

This fun, sun-soaked summer challenge will pit me, a total newbie in the growing game against the seasoned pro and mydigifarm founder, Nick. We’re turning gardening into a friendly rivalry, and trust me, it’s about to get interesting. So, without further ado, meet our contenders!

Meet the Contestants: Nick vs. Gerard

Nick comes from the rolling hills of Southern Ohio, where he grew up surrounded by farms, hay bales, and cow milking (yep, really!). After years in New England mastering computers and building massive data centers, Nick had a spark of genius in 2018, the birth of mydigifarm. Today, he’s running this open-source passion project while tending to his own small farm and growing delicious food crops.

And me, Gerard? I hail from sunny South Florida, where the beaches and vacation vibes run wild. I’m a computer enthusiast too, and through work, I connected with Nick. But here’s the twist, I’m a complete rookie when it comes to gardening. No green thumb here… yet!

Here’s Where the Fun Begins:

Nick’s farm savvy know-how will be tested against my fresh, wide-eyed enthusiasm. Each of us will grow three different herbs in similar raised garden beds over 8 weeks. We’ll share all the ups, downs, surprises, and maybe a few funny fails along the way.

The Herbs in Play:

Italian Parsley – Delicate, flavorful, and picky about its watering.

Sweet Basil – A sun-loving diva that thrives on warmth but demands attention.

Sage – Hardy, aromatic, and surprisingly forgiving.

The Rules:

Both contestants will use similar raised beds either bought or DIY. They will both attempt to out grow one another producing the best 3 herbs without any additional assistance.

The challenge runs for 8 weeks, starting this week!

The Goal:

Grow the healthiest, most flavorful, and most beautiful parsley, basil, and sage.

How We’ll Keep You Posted:

Every week, we’ll drop fresh updates with photos, progress notes, pest encounters, growth spurts, and all the twists this little gardening adventure throws at us.

The Grand Finale:

At the end of week 8, we’ll compare everything including growth, aroma, leaf size, and overall health to crown the ultimate herb champion!

Can’t wait to share Week 1’s results with you all! Stay tuned and get ready to root for your favorite below in the comments section!
